Hi there & welcome to BdaKiNE.com 😁
When we heard that three members of the Grateful Dead were starting up a band with John Mayer, we had mixed feelings. We were of course excited that the music would continue and we’d have more shows in our future but we were leary of John Mayer.
I’m sure he’s a nice guy; he just seems totally outside the box of the Dead Family. We had just seen Trey Anastasio totally killing it during the Fare Thee Well Tour so how could John Mayer, a “pop star” best known for dating beautiful actresses, even compare.
The only way to find out was to fly to New York for the shows at Madison Square Garden. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and what better way to spend the night than with the Grateful Dead/Dead and Company.
Well, if you’ve been following my blog, you probably noticed that in the two months since I started writing posts, I am wrong a lot. Once again I was wrong – this time about John Mayer playing with the Dead.
Originally, I thought, this John guy must be on crack if he thinks he can do the Jerry Garcia part. Well, the truth about John Mayer is that he’s not only able to do the part but he is also able to do it really, really well.
Deadheads tend to be hippies who are all about peace and love. When it comes to the music though – watch out because these mellow hippies come to life with the intensity to rival an NFL player on massive steroids.
Deadheads KNOW their music – they know all of the words to the songs, when the songs were played as well as where they were played best (which is always a fun topic of debate).
The evening was surreal in a good way – a 38 year old pop star rocking it with legends almost twice his age was definitely a sight to see. And as the saying goes about New York “if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere”.
East coast Deadheads are pretty intense and they were wowed over as were we. Talk about JOY, it BdaKiNE big time. Now the only question left is, when’s the next show?
Thank you for visiting BdaKiNE.com & have a grateful day 😁
Hugs, Lori 😘
