Hi there & welcome to Bdakine.com!
One of our favorite restaurants in San Diego is Top of the Market – they have some of the best & freshest seafood in town as well as fabulous views of San Diego Bay. Whenever we have friends visiting, this is where we take them. Even our picky friends from New York love it here!
So, you can imagine how bummed we were when we heard that there was a fire at Top of the Market; thankfully, no one was hurt. Instead of only repairing the damage from the smoke and water, the owners decided to completely remodel the 26 year old restaurant. They installed larger windows, changed the decor to softer colors and replaced the outdoor umbrellas with awnings. All in all, it took about seven months to complete the transformation.
Even though the restaurant was closed, the owners retained almost all of their 300 employees, several of whom have worked there since the restaurant opened in 1989! We’re lucky that San Diego has so many great restaurants with amazing views, food, wines and service. For us, what makes Top of the Market so special is the owners; they are the gold standard of how to use your success as a way to make the world a better place for everyone not just yourself and your peers. They don’t give money to charity as a way of self-promotion, in fact they give very quietly. You just know that their hearts are in the right place.
One example of their kindness is to donate a portion of the restaurant’s initial sales to the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation as a way to thank them for saving Top of the Market/Fish Market. It makes me proud to know that some of the money we have spent at Top of the Market will go towards life-saving devices for the fire fighters.
I want to thank Top of the Market for embodying the spirit of Bdakine and I’d like to thank you for taking the time to visit BdaKiNE.com
Hi there & welcome to BdaKiNE.com!
One of the things I love about having house guests is you end up being a tourist in your own town. So, when our friends from New York were visiting, we decided to do something we had never done before – we went to the Midway to watch the San Diego Parade of Lights. Wow, talk about a double whammy! The Midway is super cool and the Parade of the Lights put the evening over the top.
According to the Parade of Lights website, approximately 40,000 people turn out to see over 80 boats decorated in a “Christmas Around the World” theme. Thankfully, we were able to get a reservation at the Midway for a buffet dinner below deck and seating on the flight deck to watch the parade. We figured parking would be tough so we took good ol’ Uber to the Midway. Traffic was bad and the parking lot at the Midway was full so we definitely made the right choice not to drive.
San Diegans have been decorating their boats for the Parade of Lights since 1971. It’s such a perfectly California tradition to have a holiday parade on the water with boats instead of floats. The view from the Midway’s flight deck has got to be one of the best in the City. Even though I have lived here for 25 years now, I felt like I was seeing San Diego Bay for the first time and was in awe of the beauty surrounding me. Our friends were in hog heaven being outside on a December night, I seriously think they would have been just as happy standing in a parking lot.
Even if we don’t have friends visiting us next December, I plan on going to the Parade of Lights. Every time, I think about being on that flight deck, watching those boats on the bay with our friends, my heart bursts with JOY.
Thank you for visiting BdaKiNE.com & have a grateful day!
“Inspired by the beauty and culture of Maui, our mission is to spread aloha through vivid color, clarity, and detail.” – Maui Jim
Have you ever tried on Maui Jim Sunglasses? I hadn’t until we were in Maui this past November. We stopped by their offices in Lahaina and my husband was going crazy when he put on a pair – he’s prone to exaggeration so I didn’t pay much attention to him. Well, in this case, his hyperbole was spot on!!!
On one wall of the store is a mural of the ocean. When you put on their sunglasses and look at the mural, you not only see the ocean but now you can also see tons of colorful fish and coral in the water; it is totally trippy to say the least. YOWZA, sign me up, I am a believer in the power of polarized lenses.
I used to think that unless you’re a commercial fisherman or someone who is on the water all of the time, polarized lenses weren’t worth the price. Now that I’ve experienced their magic on land as well as sea, I have to admit that they are most definitely worth every penny and then some. You don’t realize how much glare is out there (especially when you’re driving) until you don’t have it anymore. Plus, their lenses combat harmful UV rays which can cause a lot of damage to your eyes.
Speaking of UV rays, don’t ever buy super cheap sunglasses that don’t have proper UV protection. What happens is the dark lenses makes your pupil expand and your eyes are exposed to even more harmful light than if you didn’t have sunglasses on and squinted instead. Repeated exposure to UVA and UVB rays may increase your risk for cataracts, macular degeneration and certain types of cancer. So please buy your sunglasses from a reliable source or go without……
If you decide to go with a pair of Maui Jim’s, your life will be made brighter and your heart will be filled with the JOY of seeing a more vibrant world.
Thanks for visiting BdaKiNE.com & have a grateful day! Hugs, Lori
