Hi there & welcome to BdaKiNE.com
Last week we learned about the awesome work that’s being done at the Monarch School – an educational program for homeless children. One of my other favorite nonprofits, Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), shares building space with the Monarch School. When I first started my blog, I had written about BLCI (blog post #3). I love this organization so much that I am writing about them again!
On average, it costs $9,000 a year to educate a child in California whereas it costs approximately $40,000 a year to pay for someone in prison. So, for me it’s all about “education today rather than prisons tomorrow”.
I love programs like BLCI; they are helping children break the cycle of poverty by giving them the skills necessary to become productive members of our society. Studies show that if a child gets behind in third grade, it’s nearly impossible for them to catch up. So, BLCI’s programs start in 3rd grade and work closely with each student and their family from elementary, through middle, high school, and college until they get their diploma.
BLCI provides the guidance, training, and support with free academic enrichment such as: exploring colleges, maneuvering the application process, mentoring, skill building, and tutoring. Everything they are doing obviously works because they have a 100% graduation rate!
I was recently on a committee that interviewed BLCI’s high school seniors for scholarships and WOW! I can’t even find the words adequate enough to describe how awesome these students are. All of them were incredibly prepared, well spoken, and charismatic. My heart broke that all of them couldn’t receive scholarships.
I take consolation in knowing that BLCI stays in constant touch with all of their students to make sure they are able to overcome any obstacles they may encounter. I can’t wait to see what these young people end up doing with their lives, I know that whatever it is, it will be better than perfect.
Thank you for visiting BdaKiNE.com & have a grateful day!
