Several years ago, we were walking around San Francisco and decided we were hungry but we didn’t have a place in mind to grab something to eat. We saw a long line of people outside a tiny Chinese Restaurant and thought, “it must be good if people are willing to wait in the chilly weather to eat there”. We started talking to the people in line – a mix of locals and out of towners. We seemed to be the only ones who hadn’t heard of the House of Nanking.
When we were finally seated at our cramp little table, the waitress gave us menus and we quickly decided what we wanted to eat. Peter, the owner came by to take our order and as soon as we finished telling him what we wanted, he shook his head in disgust and said “No, none of those good choices. I will bring you our specials”. Before we had a chance to respond, he was gone.
My guess is that Peter stops by every table to order for his guests especially if he spies newbies. Thankfully, he did because the dishes he chose for us were oh, so delicious and incredibly unique. Not scary unique but healthy and flavorful. We were hooked and came back the next day for lunch before heading to the airport.
After discovering the House of Nanking, every time we are going to be in San Francisco, we plan our days around eating there. As much as we love the food, my husband was not big on waiting in line and once inside, the restaurant was always PACKED with very little space to move around. So, you can imagine our delight when they opened a second restaurant called Fang that serves the same food.
Fang is much bigger so no more waiting in line and you aren’t bumping elbows with the people at the table next to you. The food is still just as delicious too. Now, we plan our hotel so we can walk to Fang and we eat every meal there.
Peter’s attention to detail is what makes the food so delicious. He personally goes to the market every morning and picks out everything for the menu. Plus, he pretty much only serves food that is in season, fresh, and local.
We feel incredibly lucky to have stumbled upon the House of Nanking and Fang because there’s nothing quite like the JOY of a good meal, especially when shared with those you love.
