Hi there & welcome to BdaKiNE.com
I’ve been so lucky that on the days I’ve been home, the Old Globe has had a play in town. This time, I got to catch “Rain” which is based on the short story by Somerset Maugham. “Rain” was adapted as a movie three times and the main character was played by legends: Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford, and Rita Hayworth.
The story takes place in the year 1924 at a boarding hotel on a Somoan island. Two couples (including a missionary) are shocked by Sadie’s arrival when they learn that she has a less than reputable profession. The missionary takes it upon himself to save Sadie’s soul but it turns out that he is the one that needs saving.
The acting and singing are fabulous but what makes the play awesome is the set. The open-walled “hotel” has multi-levels & rooms and quite often has scenes being acted out in different rooms simultaneously. The best part was actual water being used for the rain scenes. We were sitting near the front so it was fun to get a few splashes of water on us.
The Old Globe is just the cutest – the theater is small enough that there’s not a bad seat in the house yet big enough to present first class productions. I always feel incredibly blessed to have such a cool thing to do in my neighborhood and am grateful for all of the people who make this art form possible.
Thank you for visiting BdaKiNE.com& have a grateful day
