Hi there & welcome to BdaKiNE.com
One of my all time favorite events is the Timken Museum’s Art of Fashion. Sadly, I had lived on the edge of Balboa Park for 20 years before I discovered this museum but I guess I should be happy that I found it at all.
The Timken is the only art museum in Balboa Park that is free to the public and I am a firm believer that art should be available to everyone, not just the people who can afford it. One of my besties is an art history professor and she sends her students to the Timken because they have a world class art collection at an admission fee that is perfect for a student budget.
Pat O’Connor is the genius behind the Art of Fashion and in recent years, the Timken has collaborated with the David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. Academy Award winning designer, Deborah Nadoolman Landis is the founder and chair of the Copley Center as well as the professor of graduate students who interpret one of the Timken Museum’s paintings through costume design.
During the eight week course, Deborah teaches her students about the painting and the artist, then it’s up to the students to decide how they want their designs to reflect what they learned. I remember being totally blown away by the designs the first year; the students’ creativity and attention to detail was truly awe inspiring. I love that you can tell they interpreted the same painting yet their masterpieces are all incredibly different from each other.
Well, enough of my rambling, please enjoy the photos of these artists who are well on their way to greatness!!
Thank you for visiting BdaKiNE.com & have a grateful day!
