Hi there & welcome to BdaKiNE.com!
I know that a lot of people consider opera to be a total yawn but if you can get past the stereotypes associated with Opera, you will find that it is a reflection of who we are in the most dramatic of ways.
With opera, “more is more and less is a bore” (one of my favorite mottos). Everything about Opera is B-I- G, HUGE! The sets are always over the top elaborate eye candy, the costumes are gorgeous, and the actresses are glamorous, beautiful and of course divas. And who doesn’t love to watch a diva in action?!
Opera combines music and theater to showcase the ups and downs of life – anger, death, despair, fear, hope, jealousy, joy, loneliness, love, and sorrow. Above all, I think it’s important to remember where you come from and Opera is the world’s first form of multimedia combining acting, costumes, design, music, singing, and staging.
Opera’s roots can be traced back more than 400 years ago to Florence, Italy. A small group of artists, musicians, statesmen and writers decided to recreate a Greek drama through music. Over the years, Opera has changed but the passion is the one constant and in San Diego, we are lucky to still have an opera company.
In addition to putting on traditional operas, San Diego Opera also does productions that are a bit more modern and appeal to a wider audience helping to make and keep opera entertaining for a younger generation. Earlier in the year, I got to see “Great Scott” which hard core fans might not like because it’s more of broadway play than an opera but it’s definitely entertaining and perfect for a first timer.
If I didn’t know better, I would have thought that “Great Scott” was written for San Diego. Arden Scott is an opera star who tries to save the opera company where she launched her career. Unfortunately, her opening night performance happens to coincide with the city’s football team playing in the Super Bowl.
Well, I stand corrected – not many people would think the storyline about the football team has anything to do with America’s finest city. Anyway, I thought the Opera was really funny and entertaining. And my husband who is a bit of an insomniac loves Opera because he always falls asleep and says it’s worth every penny for the awesome nap he takes.
