Hi there & welcome to BdaKiNE.com 😁
My husband always says that as great as it is to be my husband, he’d much rather be my dog. And, he is right! I absolutely adore dogs and am proud to say so.
Bestie B and I became friends because of our love of dogs, Black Labs in particular. When you treasure dogs as much as I do, you just know that you will get along well with another dog person especially when they like the same breed that you do.
Bestie B and I met when we were training Black Labs for a service dog program. We got our puppies when they were eight weeks old and began socializing & training them immediately. We attended weekly classes that utilized clicker training to capture a lot of the behavior the puppies were doing naturally.
One of the important advantages of clicker training is that it teaches a dog to think for herself rather than wait for instruction from the handler. If for example, someone in a wheelchair falls and gets hurt, the dog needs to be able to assess the situation and then get help either by alert barking or if necessary by grabbing the leash, giving it to someone who can help and guiding the person back to the location of the accident.
Before I started training service dogs, I had never had a Labrador Retriever. Wow, what a wonderful ride I was in for! All these dogs want to do is please you and be with you. They are total chow hounds and will quite literally jump through hoops for the tiniest of treats.
After about two years of training, the dogs are matched with a recipient and begin their life of service. People always ask if it is difficult to give up the dog. YES!!!!!!!! I literally spend more time with my service dogs than I do with my husband. As brutal as it is to let go of the dog you trained, the process is made easier by knowing that your pup is going to give someone a great gift – endless love and independence.
Just like BESTIE B, my service dogs will always have a special place in my heart; they BdaKiNE.
Thank you for visiting BdaKiNE.com & have a grateful day 🌞 Hugs, Lori 😘
